 | Subject: UNDERSTANDING MENTAL DISORDERS !!! Sat 15 Aug 2009, 5:05 pm | |
| Mental ill-health has long been considered a "shameful disease" but if we understand that it's neither shameful nor a disease, wecan help those who suffers from it. What is a mental disorder? Put simply, a mental disorder is when a person's brain works in ways that r not considered normal.Since the brain controls the body, mental disorders often take an emotional or physical forms , such as depression, mood swings, violent tics or obsessive-compulsive behavior. Is it a disease? No! it's noe a disease. It's a disorder. There are many different types of disorders (schizophrenia , mania, bipolar disorder , OCD & personality disorders to name a v.few) , & while there is no 1 single explanation for why they happen, it's generally understood that mental disorders occur when there is an imbalance of chemicals that the body naturally produces. Are mentally disordered people mad? May be they seem mad to us, & it can be v.frightening if we don't know what they r doing (for example ,some severely mentally disturbed people repeatedly strike their hands against the wall untill they draw blood,others-suffering from Tourette's Syndrome-spontaneously burst into obscenities) but proper diagnosis can provide medication that may help curb any violent tendencies.Mentally unstable people can be dangerous if their illness is too advanced & they don't have any treatment options, but if some1 is taking medication regularly then they deserve to be treated just like any other person. Why is it seen as a shameful disease? Perhaps because we dnt know how else to deal with it.Mental disorders are hard to understand & when people don't understand something, they get scared. They deal with this fear by declaring the source of it to be evil. What do we do if something evil occurs in our own family? We fear that other ppl will discover it, & this fear makes us ashamed to admit that some1 we're related to is mentally ill. It's worse if we feel that we may have a disorder ourselves because the stigma associated with it may prevent us from seeking help.Nowhere is this more common than in cases of good ole depression.Clinical depression is a serious mental disorder & if left untreated, it can spiral out of control. However, simple medication can help keep it in check, & that is true of many other disorders. If we r sensible enough to realize that mental disorders are not shameful diseases , if we r brave enough to talk about them because someone we love suffers from one, & we r openminded enough to listen, then we can help.....guess how many? More than 14 million-& that's just the registered number of people suffering from mental disorders in Pakistan. They actual no. is much , much higher but we'll never know how much untill we stop thinking of mental disorders as a shameful disease !!! |
